RecallSight methodology

What happens before a recall?

NHTSA explicitly says consumer complaints are used with other data sources to identify possible safety issues and determine whether a defect trend may exist. RecallSight organizes those public evidence layers without turning them into a proprietary safety score.

Report

Consumer complaint

A public report can describe a failure, crash, fire, injury or other concern. A complaint is not proof of a defect.

Review

Investigation

NHTSA may review complaints and other information, then obtain manufacturer data if further analysis is warranted.

Context

Manufacturer communications

Manufacturers submit communications about defects, failures, malfunctions and other deviations, including many technical service bulletins.

Action

Recall

A formal safety recall creates an official remedy path for covered vehicles or equipment.

The opportunity

Most consumer tools answer “is there a recall?” RecallSight is being designed to answer the broader question: “what public safety evidence exists around this product, how has it changed over time, and what is official versus merely a signal?”
